On Tuesday 16th January, BBC Documentary ‘Inside the Factory’ showed behind the scenes of a plant that makes one of the nation’s best loved soft drinks, Ribena.
The information packed documentary follows Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey as they explore Lucozade Ribena’s Gloucestershire factory, gaining an insight on the process behind how the globally recognised blackcurrant drink is manufactured. Whilst making their way around the factory, the presenters come face to face with Wonderware System Platform and Wonderware InBatch. Both play an equally huge part in the success of producing the fruit filled drink.
Lucozade Ribena Suntory (LRS) first approached SCADA leaders Wonderware in 2014, with an aim of finding an effective solution to monitor and improve their energy performance. Since then LRS have implemented Wonderware System Platform, which allows the company to convert the raw energy data into actionable information, allowing a better understanding of the energy consumption patterns, costs and also to identify any potential errors that could occur.
Since rolling out Wonderware System Platform in the plant, LRS have noticed an increase in production and a reduction in engineering time and effort. System Platform is capable of connecting to hundreds of field devices and plant systems as well as providing configuration, deployment, communication, security and data connectivity, bringing with it a multitude of benefits.
In this documentary, we witness Gregg Wallace getting hands-on with Wonderware InBatch, using the software to begin the process of transforming the blackcurrants into liquid. He later describes the experience with the statement “that was pretty instant wasn’t it”.
Implementing Wonderware InBatch, a control system independent software, opened up a range of benefits for Lucozade Ribena Suntory, including a reduction in lifecycle engineering costs of batch execution systems, and batch application flexibility with the help of ArchestrA technology.
